Ghim Moh Pendant 5 by Hans Tan Studio
Hans Tan is a designer and educator whose work tiptoes on the boundaries between design, craft and art. He believes that design not only helps us to “do” but also to “understand”, and his practice deploys design as a medium, making use of utility as a pretext for visual discourse. A two-time winner of Design of the Year at the President’s Design Award, Hans also won Designer of the Year for 2017–18. His works have been shown in exhibitions such as SINGLETOWN at the Venice Biennale, Surface art/design in Dortmund and Cologne, and Local Icons. East/West at MAXXI in Rome. They are also held in private and corporate collections, as well as in permanent public collections at the National Collection of Singapore; the M+ museum in Hong Kong; the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York; and the Princessehof National Museum of Ceramics in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands. Hans is an associate professor in the Division of Industrial Design at the National University of Singapore, where in 2019 he received the Outstanding Educator Award.
